MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main
The Conservation at MMK
Contemporary art is often made of everyday materials, the preservation and exhibition of which frequently confront restorers with unusual tasks.
The MMK collection includes a wide range of different types of visual arts. Their preservation, exhibition, transport, packaging and storage can be very time-consuming. In addition to paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures, our restorers are also responsible for murals, installations, video art, luminaires, different plastic materials, and also devote their attention to performances, organic and ephemeral art, for example.
The following are some of the most important tasks of the MMK’s Restorers Department:
Developing concepts for the preventative conservation in all fields and for all materials of contemporary art.
Documenting the artworks in the Collection as well as loans, describing their condition and keeping them under “surveillance”.
Advising curators on the protection of exhibits and their professional presentation.
Examining and researching the various painterly and sculptural techniques as well as multimedia and how they are used in contemporary art; on the basis of this research, developing new methods and opportunities for restoring all kinds of materials.
Collecting and archiving the techniques and working materials used by contemporary artists in order to make these available for current research in the field of art.
Conserving and restoring all of the artworks in the Collection.
Caring for exhibitions’ condition on a daily basis.
