On 1 June 2012, the newly established MMK Foundation, was entered in the Golden Book of foundations of the city of Frankfurt. The city's mayor Petra Roth, the deputy mayor in charge of culture Prof Dr Felix Semmelroth, the chairman of the executive board of the Commerzbank Martin Blessing, and MMK director Dr Susanne Gaensheimer signed the document within the framework of a festive event at the Römer, Frankfurt's town hall.
Since 1930, inscription in the Golden Book has been Frankfurt's way of honouring the dedication of the city's donors to the general welfare. Frankfurt is one of Germany's foundation capitals.
The purpose of the MMK Stiftung is to support the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst. Its funds are to be applied particularly to conservation measures, cultural education, exhibition and collection presentations as well as research projects.
The foundation's endowment capital amounts to one million euros, which came from a donation made by the Commerzbank in 2010. At that time, the Commerzbank also placed seventeen works from the former Dresdner Bank art collection on permanent loan to the MMK. Charlotte Posenenske, Dan Flavin, Morris Louis, Alighiero Boetti, Jasper Johns and Michael Beutler are among the artists represented by those works.
In order to ensure the lasting benefit of the Commerzbank donation and to apply it – in keeping with the donor's wishes – to supporting the goals and tasks of the MMK, the donation was transferred to the newly established foundation.
